About two years after opening Oasis Counselling Centre, it became apparent that something was missing. The residents were being beautifully looked after for 12 weeks and then dropped. This did not feel good.
Addiction treatment does not work to a specified time-scale, regardless of what the health insurance companies demand. Drug rehabilitation takes a long time, we believe that recovery is a journey, not a destination.
Accordingly, we opened Solar House so that the process which was started at Oasis Treatment Centre could be gently nurtured, with the result being that a mature, recovering addict could emerge. Residents at Solar House have two therapy groups a week, one-to-one counselling, morning house meetings and a resident House Manager to ask for help when needed. Residents are encouraged to get employment – either voluntary or paid, or to enrol on a study course.
Solar House in Plettenberg Bay South Africa
Solar House is a short walk from Oasis Treatment centre and, of course, the beach.
The Solar House Programme is based on the Minnesota Model of Twelve Step recovery. The weekly interpersonal group is used to deal with the array of emotions that usually accompany early recovery. Awareness is also facilitated through weekly one-to-one counselling and aftercare groups. There is a community support group each morning where detailed daily plans are discussed. All residents are expected to attend a minimum of three Twelve Step meetings per week and continue with their step work.
Solar House Residents
Residents will be helped to follow the Twelve Step philosophy and lifestyle. This includes taking financial responsibility. Solar House residents will be encouraged and assisted to find employment.
